The Tutorial
The full new character tutorial, done properly for the first time. Four short errands for Boots of the Long Road, which carry a 40 velocity speed clicky at level one, and a lesson in item merging that pays off all game.
I had always skipped the tutorial, and doing it properly turns out to be worth twenty minutes. The errands themselves are trivial. The reward is not: Boots of the Long Road carry a two minute speed clicky at 40 velocity, which is Journeyman's BootsEverQuest Legends
Journeyman's BootsMAGIC ITEM NODROPSlotFEETAC1Weight2.5SizeSMALLClass: ALLRace: ALLEffect: JourneymanBoots (Clicky)Any Slot, Casting Time: InstantSource: Najena, Drelzna at level one, and the quest hands you enough duplicate pairs to teach item merging on something you actually want.
Set the UI Up First
Before anything else, while it is quiet.
- Load the Default Modern skin rather than the stone one you start with.
- Right click the inventory and choose legacy layout, which is far more readable.
- Raise the stance bar buttons to 125 and stretch the main hotbar out. Stances get pressed constantly and the default targets are small.
- Build the hide corpse, forage and auto inventory macro now, since you will copy it to every character afterwards.
- Set the spell book to classic layout if the modern one bothers you.
Multibinding is my habit, not a requirement: every ability bound to one key so a single button drives the rotation. I am lazy about playing this game, and I know some people hate doing it this way.
The Errands
Three NPCs, all named Doug.
- Hand Doug the letter already sitting in your inventory. Four percent experience straight away.
- Go south to the cave and talk to his father, who wants his weekly supplies fetched.
- Buy the package from the merchant at Meek's Depot, which is all the errand amounts to.
- Bring it back for Boots of the Long Road, the first reward and the one that matters.
- Say more work, then head up the stairs east to the crypt to find the grandfather.
The Skeletons
A combat lesson disguised as a fetch.
- He wants two skulls, one from a rambunctious skeleton and one from a fragile one.
- Fragile skeletons are nearly immune to melee and die to abilities and spells.
- Rambunctious ones are the opposite, so melee those down.
- That is the actual teaching point: not everything is killed the same way, delivered before it can cost you anything.
Item Merging
The most valuable thing in the tutorial.
- Turning in the skulls gives a second identical pair of boots.
- Hold right click on the equipped pair, drop the spare in, and merge.
- That produces Boots of the Long Road plus one, worth an extra hit point.
- The skeletons come back, so repeat for more pairs. A second round took me to plus one and a half before the rest were slow enough to respawn that I moved on.
- This is the upgrade system the whole game runs on, taught here on an item you will keep using.
Before You Leave
Two things worth knowing.
- Your primary class locks here. Secondary classes stay changeable, the primary does not. Mine locked as Shaman with Shadowknight secondary.
- Leaving is permanent. Say ready to leave only when you have merged everything you want.
- It drops you at your racial start, so an Iksar lands in Iksar territory rather than anywhere generic.
- Skip it if you already know EverQuest, but the boots alone justify staying. They were the whole reason I bothered.
The Tutorial at a Glance
- Load Default Modern and set the inventory to legacy layout.
- Enlarge the stance bar to 125.
- Hand Doug the letter from your inventory.
- Visit his father in the cave south.
- Buy his package at Meek's Depot and bring it back for the boots.
- Say more work, then take the stairs east to the crypt.
- Kill fragile skeletons with spells, rambunctious ones with melee.
- Turn in both skulls for a duplicate pair of boots.
- Merge them, then repeat while the skeletons respawn.
- Only then say ready to leave.

Hello and welcome to the EverQuest Legends pre-order beta. Now, I just made my character. I reserved my name. I went with Shadow Knight and today we’re going to jump into it and give it a shot, right? Like I Like I never did the tutorial, so we’re going to start fresh. We’re going to do videos here. I was going to stream it, but I am I am just not in the position to stream right now, so it’s just not going to work. So, you know, we’re first in. This is This is exactly what it’s like when you first start, right? Right here now. I did Shaman primary, Shadow Knight secondary. So, let’s let’s fix our UI first because I don’t like this stone UI. This is uh This is the uh just not my favorite, right? So, we’re going to go here to interface and let’s see here. Textures, copy layout. No, that’s for my other characters. Load UI skin. Here we go. Default modern, so we’re going to go ahead and load that. And we’ll keep the We’re not going to copy my my my stuff from my other characters, right? Because I kind of want to do all that together. So, let’s uh Let’s get rid of uh this window for now. And let’s right click on the inventory window and go uh legacy layout. Right? It gives us the uh better layout there, so that’s good. We have a stance bar here. Um it does I thought they said they changed the icons, but I guess not. So, we’re going to put the stance bar um I can I cannot move my hand in the right spot, right? Oh my god, that’s painful. All right, we’re going to put it right here, but we’re going to button size this. So, we’re going to take this up to 125, right? That might make it even easier to grab, right? Now, we’re going to grab the hot bar here with our main hot bar. We’re going to set this button size to or two, whatever that is. Uh come on. So, yeah. There we go. 125. Excellent. And then we’re going to drag that and make it long, so it’s uh you know, nice and long right there. We’re going to put it like that, right? This is just our basic stuff. Going to get rid of that. We’re going to get rid of that. You don’t have to sit, you know, we don’t need find, we don’t need spells. Uh we got life tap on our bar here. Let’s put that on four. And we’ll leave that the same for right now. Uh I’m going to get rid of this. I’m going to go L macros. I guess we’ll just create a new macro this way. So, I’m right clicking here. Assign macro and then uh go to page two, a new macro. Hide corpse and then uh So, this is just the book thing I always make, right? We’re going to do uh Let’s see. Hide corpse always or looted always. I think that’s I think that’s what it is. I always copy it, right? All right. Copy like that and then um do ability forage and then auto inventory. Auto inventory, right? So, let’s hit accept. I’m going to push one. And you failed to forage. All right, so perfect. Now, it looks like we do already have a bunch of spells memorized. Uh so, that’s pretty nice. So, we can go ahead and let’s just buff up strengthen. And let’s go ahead and pick I guess we get these invocations and stuff at level one. All right. Now, we’re doing that one and then we’ll go Let’s go offensive right now. And let’s see we got strengthen and decks and then minor or actually actually Let’s go spell blade. Let’s get rid of cure disease. Let’s put minor healing right up here at the top. Minor healing. Uh right here on the spell book go display um classic layout. Boom, it doesn’t look as bad. All right, we got that going. Oh, I thought I had that going as I messed up. Actually, let’s put the life tap there actually. Tabs health life tap. Oh, that’s It’s been a while right? So, we were playing on beta right? We bind the spells as fast as you possibly could. So, uh I definitely um slower there. Now, let’s get rid of that and then we’ll put uh heals minor healing right there. And I think we’re good to go right? Like I think this is uh This is fine. I’m going to put life tap on two. I’m going to put spike disease on three. I lost I lost the icon. I crashed last time I was messing with the the stuff. So, it’s should be good there. And All right, let’s make another bar. Now, this is something I do. Uh you don’t have to do this because I know some people do not like doing what I’m about to do. But um I’m lazy when it comes to playing playing this game right? I am uh I like to push one button. Now, I what I what I do I use what is called the multi bind right? You see here it’s already set up from uh my beta time. If you go into interface uh let’s controls and you go to uh hot bar I think right? I have every single button bound to four, right? So, that’s that’s a multi-bind. And so, I can just put on burst of flame here, right there. And uh that’ll work, right? All right. So, let’s look at the thing. Basic movement, W moves forward, S backward, A to turn, D to turn the other way. Page up and page down don’t do anything in third person. Jump, crouch, right? Basic stuff. Chat, you got uh um enter to open the chat bar, right? You see the little dotting thing right down here at the bottom, right? So, basic stuff. All right. We don’t even have to waste our time with that. All right. Let’s do the uh tutorial here. I have never done this. Uh I came to Doug and I said, “Uh I don’t want to do this.” And he kicked me out. I didn’t even know. So, let’s go and hail him. And he goes, “Hail and well met, Voxel. If you like to help me with a couple of errands, let’s talk. I can’t recall, but if you’re already up to help me uh my help my father and I still need more work, just say the word. All right.” Or and if you say finished, he kicks you out, right? So, you found Doug and you’re close to enough to interact with him. You have a letter in your inventory. So, if we look somewhere in here, there we go. We have a letter. So, we got a letter from Doug, right? Open the eye and uh give it to him. So, let’s hand it to him. Let’s see what happens. There we go. We have 4% experience. And Doug carefully reads over the letter before looking up at you and responding, “A new recruit, eh?” “Welcome aboard. Let’s get you up to speed before we send you on your way. Once you’ve gotten your legs under you, let’s talk.” All right. Let’s talk. So, it’s kind of you can skip that if you want. “Let’s stretch those legs of it. Go talk to my old man in the cave to the south, right?” So, if we hit map, they have the maps in cave to the south is going to be down this way, I believe. I’m guessing it’s him up there. So, let’s uh let’s go do that. So, we can walk across the water here. Uh if you mouse if you like look up with a mouse while you’re doing that while swimming, you’ll look up. So, uh that is a quality of life thing right there. Now, how on earth do I actually get up there? All right, there’s a hole over here. All right, there’s a compass old D. You can bring that up, right? Let’s just put it like right there. All right now, so we can see it’s so we’re going south. Walk into this little cave. Oh, looks pretty nice. This is pretty cool. This is all This is all stuff that’s not in the original EverQuest, so that’s pretty cool to see. I I totally skipped all past this when I did the original beta. All right, old Doug. All right, hail. Oh, no, we’ve been getting more and more new faces around here. It does my old eyes some good. Anyways, did my son send you to help me? Yes, he did. There we go. Let us do one thing here. Let’s make a new a new window. New chat window. And then let’s go over here to filters. And let’s take um Let’s see, auto ca- auto character. Chat channels, all chat channels. And everything else. Now, this is this is public uh beta, so I don’t have to hide the I don’t have to hide my uh my chat, which I fai- failed to do most of the time anyway, so. There we go. Well, you see these old bones, they quite ain’t what they used to be. So, getting up and down the old merchant gets harder and up and down to the old merchant gets harder and harder as winters pass. If you could head down there and pick up my weekly supplies for me, I’d appreciate it. Weekly supplies? Oh, nothing unusual. Just some food and bedding and a shiny new boots. I imagine that Dagina the merchant down [laughter] at the Meek’s Depot has it all packaged up for me. You just have to go pick it up. All right, so uh So, there’s the Meek Depot right over there. So, let’s just pop down here and work our way over there, right? Riveting. >> [laughter] >> Riveting. This is pretty cool. Um I really like I I know the reward at the end of this and it’s worth doing this, right? Hail. Oh, you must be the new recruit. Welcome to our village. Everyone here is wildly self-sufficient except old Doug up in his cave. So, I only only keep supplies for him in stock. He hasn’t come down here in ages. So, if you happen to go up and see him, please bring the supplies to me. Can he can bring the supplies to him for me. All right. Okay. How do I get the supplies? Oh, yeah. Here we go. Here we go. Package for old Doug. Just buy that from her. Easy enough and now we can head on up and turn that back in. All right. So, we bought the supplies from the merchant, right? This is like if you’ve never played EverQuest, I highly recommend doing this. If you have, you can probably skip it, right? Like I mean at the end of the day, uh you know it is what it is. Now, at the end of this year, we’re going to get an item that uh is a clicky, which uh is going to be pretty beneficial. So, I highly recommend uh you know, doing it, right? So, now we have the uh the item. So, hit I, open up the thing, hand it to him, give it over. And we got Boots of the Long Road, which are the item I was talking about. And these are all also we can go ahead and put these nice leather boots on. Your first quest reward. There are a number of types of uh rewarding quests. You reward you with a pair of the boots of the long road. Open your inventory. And locate your first equipment. You can check uh hovering the cursor over them, right? So, it’s 4 AC, 5 hit points. Uh equip it and uh you can uh left click it. And put it in the file. Yeah, we we equipped it and you right click it, right? So, if I right click it, it’s going to give us uh There we go. Buffs are on. Uh let’s see here. Let me turn on the uh spell effects, too. Short duration buffs, there we go. There you go. So, you can see we got like our buffs here and traveler, which is a 2-minute uh speed buff, right? So, we’re going to run a little bit faster with 40 velocity, which is the same as the journeyman boots. All right. And he says, “Oho, thank you kindly. This should keep me going for a while. Here, take my old boots. They’re worn, maybe uh but they’re so much nicer than bare feet.” “Take a look at them and try to make sure they fit. Then, go see if my son has more work.” “He’s always has needs even if you spend your time helping him.” All right. So, we got 4% experience for that and uh let’s go down here to uh his son, other dog. All right. Which is right here. So, we’re going to say more work to him. So, more work. “Finished up with uh pops, eh? Good. Thanks for taking those supplies up to him. I see he gave you his old boots. Hope they fit. They’ve had a good chance to check them for holes. Could you do one more thing? Go up the stairs to the east of here and check on my grandfather.” All right. So, east of here, so that’s south. East is over here. So, stairs. All right. There’s some stairs. So, let’s go do that. Now, let’s take this item here and let’s let’s just hold on to it. Click it, right? So, if you hold on to it, you can turn it into an icon. And then, we can click it right here. So, we’re going to run a little bit faster while we’re doing these, right? So. And All right, we got a crypt here. Oh, jeez. Oh, there’s dead dog. Is that his grandfather? >> [laughter] >> Is there another dog over here? Uh all right, that’s uh I guess I guess where he took us. All right, hail him. Hail yourself, Exar. I hope you’re here to help. This is getting out of control. I’m here to help. In case you can’t see, I’ve got a bunch of old bones rattling up in here. In my youth, I could drive them off easily. Alas, not so much anymore. Say, a a young whisper whip whippersnapper like you could make a could help me knocking out a couple of these skeletons. Um about that would be a legendary. Bring me the skull from one of the more rambunctious skeletons, and another skull from one of the more fragile ones. They’re an odd bunch. Very fra- uh fragile to abilities or spells, almost impervious to conventional melee attacks. You should use any offensive abilities that you have. All right, so we’re going to start fighting. So, let’s go right here into our abilities. And uh let’s look at what we have available to us uh ability-wise. So, we have bash. We’re going to auto skill that. We don’t have a shield yet, though. Uh so, that’s good. And we don’t have reave yet, which is our uh shadow knight ability, so. Let’s go over here to shadow, and just see if he’s like immune, I guess. And we’re fizzling. There we go. Boom. There’s a fragile skull. All right, we got to loot that with the check mark, and then we got 11% for that. And there we go. We got the rambunctious. All right, let’s do that. Oh, well. You know, kill that one with melee. There we go. And should be good there. So, we can go into our inventory. Rambunctious and fragile. He wants to stand up to us, right? And we attack like I didn’t explain it, right? But I you know, I hit Q like it says right here to attack. I turned off the right click stuff, so I don’t think that’s going to work. But um hand both those in, we get another pair of the boots of the long road. >> [gasps] >> Uh just another pair of boots. You receive the second pair of boots of the long road in your inventory identical to the ones you already have. You can’t wear two pairs of the boots at once. So, it’s going to talk about item merging. So, if I go over to my boots that I’m wearing and I’m right I hold down right click and I just move my mouse, right? It’s going to pop up. You can also hit um left and then click left click. It’s going to pop up and then you see your boots of the long road. You click them in there. And you click merge. And now I have boots of the long road plus one, which gave me an extra one hit point, right? Perfect, right? Easy. Very easy. And so, we got two more, right? Let’s do this. Let’s do this again, right? So, we we got two more of the skulls. So, if we hand these skulls back in him again, we’re going to get another pair of boots plus another four experience. And we take those boots and we can put them in here. And now we have boots of the long road plus one and a half, right? So, pretty and nice there. Now, the other ones haven’t seemed to respond, so I’m not going to bother doing it again yet. All right, now uh oh wait wait wait. He said something else. So, he says Ah, Dudrick, I knew him well. When these were both still alive, he was just as rambunctious as ever, too. Don’t worry, I’ll put him back together soon enough. Here, take these boots. They’re they need a new sole. A new sole, get it? Uh oh, you you kids these days just don’t appreciate good humor. He trails off in his train of thought. Oh, what? I don’t remember what I was going to say. What are you about to do with the two pairs of boots, you silly goose? Back in my day, you could merge two extra boots together, make an extra strong. I doubt you’re as great an adventurer as I was in my prime, maybe, but uh I bet I can I can’t merge those same two pairs of boots. I bet you can’t merge those two pair of boots together. Give it a shot. Then go back to my grandson and tell your fetcher. All right. So, that you know, that’s what we did. We merged them and we’re good to go there. So, he is back over here. So, let’s just run down here. And hail him. Well and well met. Uh if you’ve helped my father and still need more work, all right. Uh what else do I What else is there to do? Let me see if there’s something up here before I cuz it looks like it’s finished is like the only option we got, right? And that looks like a pit of death, jeez. I see here, more work. Pops, go upstairs and check on my grandfather. You’ll know him soon I saw. I did. Train of thought. All right, finished. I see my grandfather didn’t bore you to death and add you to his collection up there. Well, the training work you can provide around here, but feel free to stop by and talk to feel free to stop by and talk to Doug Jr. If you check your bank if you want to check your bank. When you’re ready to leave, adjust to let me know and Oh, actually there’s one more thing. All right, your primary class is locked. Let’s put this right here so we can see it easier. So, yeah. If we look here in our loadouts, right? We are primary class is Shaman and our secondary class is Shadow Knight, right? We cannot change We can change some things, but we can’t change everything. The UI is very customizable, interact with objects. All right, so there we go. That’s, you know, basic stuff, right? Read all that if you don’t know and we’re going to say ready to leave. If well, if you’re ready, I’ll send you. Otherwise, you’re feel free to feel free to hang around here a little longer. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to come back here and we will miss you. All right, so this is the tutorial. We’re going to go ahead and say send. And we got the boots. That’s all I wanted, so there we go. So, that is the the EverQuest Legends tutorial. Like I didn’t show the video in this the very first time, but it is what it is. And this is where you spawn in the your origin in the Exar land, so definitely worth doing there, but we’re going to start something great. I just wanted to get this tutorial kind of made and going, but uh we’re playing on the Freeport server. My name is Voxel and you know, stop by and have have fun. If you if you want to hang out and whatnot. And you know, I’m I’m always you know, if you need help killing something, let me know and I can probably help out. And we can do it and have fun. But uh thank you guys very much for watching and please have a fantastic day.
