How I Play My Level 80 Paladin

A walkthrough of my level 80 EverQuest Paladin tank setup. Covers the stun rotation, backup heals via target-of-target, defensive cooldowns like Armor of Decorum and Deflection, the Lay Hands HoT, the always-on Sustenance of Tunare buff, and gear progression.

The level 80 Paladin tanks for the box. A stun rotation that doubles as a backup healing rotation for whoever the mob is hitting. Covers target-of-target heals to take pressure off the Druid, defensive cooldowns, the Lay Hands HoT, and gear progression at 80.

Session Overview

Tanking philosophy.

  • Role: Main tank for the 6-box plus backup healer via target-of-target heals.
  • Why heal too: Takes pressure off the Druid, who's mana-limited at 80. Target-of-target heals catch whoever the mob is actually hitting.
  • Stun chain: Three stuns on three timers. Order them by cast time so the fastest fires first.
  • Pull mechanic: Trial for Honor on every pull. Gives an incoming damage reduction buff.

Stun Rotation

The bread-and-butter aggro chain.

  • Force of Timorous (Timer 5): 1s cast, stuns up to 83.
  • Solemn Force (Timer 4): 1s cast, stuns up to 83.
  • Lesson of Contrition (Timer 6): 2s cast, does extra damage on the stun.

Order matters: All three stuns are sorted by cast time in the multibind so the 1-second stuns fire first. Different timers means none of them block each other in the spell button queue.

Backup Heal Chain

Healing whoever the mob is attacking.

  • Burst of Marrow: 3,000 target-of-target heal, 12s reuse.
  • Radiant Light: 1,500 target-of-target heal, 0.2s cast time. Emergency save.
  • Aurora of Morrow: 1,300 group heal, 3s cast.
  • Wave of Absolution: 2,000 group heal at the end of the rotation.

Why target-of-target: The Druid's multibind heals the tank. The Paladin's target-of-target heals catch the casters when a mob breaks loose. Together they cover the whole group without switching targets.

Debuffs & Procs

Free damage and aggro tools.

  • Trial for Honor: Pull tool. Incoming damage reduction + hatred over time. Cast on every pull.
  • Mark of the Saint: Reverse damage shield. 27 damage to the mob every time it strikes, with a small heal proc.
  • Force of Disruption: Damage spell at the end of the rotation.

Defensive Cooldowns

The "don't die" buttons.

  • Armor of Decorum: Mini-defensive. Absorbs 25% incoming melee damage up to 22,000 total over 1 minute.
  • Deflection: Block everything with your shield. Never gets replaced, useful all the way to 130.
  • Armor of the Inquisitor: Increases incoming heal effectiveness + bonus AC.
  • Lay Hands: 78,000 instant heal + 20,000/tick HoT for 6 seconds. Saves your life when nothing else will.
  • Divine Aura: Total invulnerability + 12,000 HP/tick HoT. Last-resort emergency button.
  • Hand of Piety: 7,800 group heal. Quick group save.

Lay Hands is real: With heroic stat buffs, the HoT alone can carry you through a fight that should have killed you.

Always-On Buffs

The buff bar essentials.

  • Sustenance of Tunare: Current Ward of Tunare line. Heal + AC + attack proc on melee hits. Always up.
  • Divine Protector's Unity (Rank 2): Casts Righteous Fury proc (~270 damage proc) plus the current armor buff. This is why you take Aegolism over Druid skin. Better stats, mana regen, and the extra proc.
  • Bthur's Mark: Current Symbol HP buff line.
  • Aegolism: Take this on the Paladin (block Druid skin). Better than Druid skin + Symbol combined.
  • Blessed Aura: +10% to all healing spells.
  • Remorseless of the Fallen: Killer buff after slaying mobs.

Aggro Management

The block list and the multibind.

  • Mark of Salvation: Group hate-reduction buff. Cast on everyone else so they pull less aggro and you hold it more easily.
  • Block on the tank: The tank must block Mark of Salvation. Otherwise it lands on you too and your hate generation drops, making the buff useless for the whole group.
  • Holy Forge: Massive damage vs undead. 5min duration, 1hr reuse. Pop it for undead-heavy zones.
  • Inquisitor's Judgment: Burn AA. 1,200 damage proc 20 times. Stack into burn windows.

Spell Set Macros

New /pause + /memspellset commands.

  • Mem macros: One button to swap spell sets. Useful for swapping between tank-spec and healer-spec.
  • Pause syntax: /pause 100 = 10 seconds (after the previous command).
  • Healer spec: Drop stuns, swap in more heals. Useful when grouping with another tank like a Warrior or Shadow Knight.

Gear Progression at 80

Tank gear matters most in the box.

  • Elegant Defiant: Starting to show its weakness at 80.
  • Marks of Valor (level 75 gear): Decent step up. Buy from the Call of the Forsaken merchant in Ethernere: West Karana.
  • Marks of Valor (level 80 gear): Buy these next. Significant upgrade over Elegant Defiant.
  • Paragon Plate (Seeds of Destruction): Best path if you're investing time. Equivalent to House of Thule tier 1.
  • Weapons: Best weapon you can find. Typically a rune-proc weapon for tanking. Shield should have a high-AC tank proc.

AA priority: Defensive AAs first, always. Offense and utility second. Tank stats compound. Every point of AC and HP makes the entire box safer.

Hello and welcome to how I play my level 80 Paladin. So today we’re going to talk about uh the Paladin. This is going to be a progressive video from the last uh video. So it’s going to be kind of like some plus ones, but I have changed up a lot of things. So uh let’s go ahead and get into it. We’re going to talk about spells first. We’re going to talk about my rotation/multivind and how I have that set up. Then we’ll go into the one button for burn we have uh followed by uh some talks about gear. So as you can see I have a lot of buttons on here. A lot of my buttons are just blank placeholders cuz I am doing uh uh multibboxing. So my charact when I push a key on one character it gets distributed to all the characters kind of thing. So like my enchanter has me and stuff like that. So that is why there’s some blank buttons that uh I just skip over. Uh but first up, our first spell is trial by honor or trial for honor. So this will uh uh put a debuff on the target, right? It gives us a little AC. Let me see if I can get it. There we go. So there we go. And it’s on. It gives us this trial 34 second buff. Uh gives us hatred over time. You want to have this on like pretty much every single mob. Now, you could in theory spam this and you would get this incoming damage reduction plus the absorbed, right? Uh but I I’m just not I’m not 100% sold on spamming it. I know some people do though. So, your choice is yours. But, uh that’s what I use to pull mobs with, and that is uh probably the only time I cast it is usually when I pull the mob. Mobs don’t last long enough for me to even really think about it too much. The next up, we have three stuns. Now, uh if you remember from uh the 75, we were still using force. I’ve gotten rid of it. I have gotten rid of the lower level force. And now these are uh these are actually sorted by cast time. Uh so you see the 1 second, 1 second, 2 second. Right now, Forest of Team being the level 81, uh it stuns up to 83. Same with the solemn forest that stuns up to 83 also. Now, these ones uh pretty much just stun the target, don’t move it. Now, this one right here, I’ve noticed it does move the target sometimes. Uh or maybe there is a version of it that does, but uh keep that in mind when you do your lesson. Right now, this is a two second cast, 1.9 with reductions. They’re all uh pretty low on mana, like under, you know, 110 mana. So, they’re very spammable. Uh, now this one does a little damage. So, that is kind of nice if you think about it. You get a little extra damage out of that. So, I have those three stuns. That’s the only three stuns I have memorized at the moment because they’re all on timers, right? So, timer five, four, and six. Now, that’s that’s kind of important because if it’s on the same timer, the spell button is going to be blocked. So, you can’t do the same timer. So, I have those in my rotation ordered by the cast time. So, the 1 second ones are first followed by the the uh 2C one. That is because I want the I want to get those stuns out there immediately, right? So, that’s kind of the thing. Now, we next have Mark of the Saint, which is a I think we just got it this this level. If we had it before, I totally didn’t even notice it. Uh but this is our uh reverse damage shield line. uh places a mark on your target dealing 27 damage each time the target strikes another creature. So, it’s like a reverse damage shield with a little bit of heal. Now, I have this on my debuff button right here. Cast five, right? I just do that. You’ll see all my other characters doing all their stuff. Uh so, let’s shift numpad nine, right? Send all those pets back. All right. So, you can see it gets put on here right here. So every time uh you know there’s a strike, there’s going to be a 15 point heal going to something, right? So that’s kind of nice to have when it comes to it. So I have it there. I don’t debuff as much as I should, but when I do, that will be cast from now on. Uh we’ll try to keep that going all the way to one uh 130 because in my last paladin I did not, and I felt like I was losing a little bit um with from that, but it should work out pretty well. Next up, we have heals. Now, I can’t actually test any of these heals while I’m in the this zone because these are all targeted target heals plus one uh group heal. So, the the concept here is let’s get these four up. These are fast target to target heals. Now, burst of marorrow. Uh this one will uh heal your target for 3,000, you know, damage, right? Let me target myself. You can see this and it’s got a 12 second recast time. So, it’s it’s a nice one there. It’ll do the target to target. So, it’s a big heal. Now, my point on having the heals uh mostly my thing is to take the load off my druid uh who who seems to struggle with uh healing at this point mana wise. So, uh it is it is a struggle. So, this is taking the Paladin and putting more healing into the Paladin’s rotation, which I don’t even know what else I would put in there. Otherwise, maybe just melee, let it just, you know, do the stuns and melee. Uh, but this is, you know, working for me, right? Uh, then we do Radiant Light, which is another uh target to target heal. This one’s only 1,500 and, uh, it’s half the mana, but this one here is is a 02 seconds. So this is this is going to really like save somebody’s life. Now these are all target of target heals, right? So whatever the target I’m fighting is fighting is going to get to heal. Now if you remember from uh the Gribbles video we did uh my my my wizard was just taking tons of hits. And so this is this change is to really help out with that situation where my druid’s multi-bind rotation is solely for healing me whereas this will heal whoever is getting hit. So it’s kind of a little bit of a change. We’ll see how it goes longterm, but should be fine. Then we have Aura of the Marorrow, which is a uh another heal to the group though, but uh this one’s 1300, so it’s pretty nice there. It’s a 3se secondond cast time, so it just depends on how far you get into the rotation um for that. Now, I I can manly cast all these by just pushing the button. So, that’s something else to keep in mind is why they’re all there. I don’t know how far this rotation will get into this in most fights. It’s variable, right? it will, you know, the mom might die before I even get to the first heal. So, it is very variable uh when it comes to that kind of thing there. And then finally, we have wave of absolution, which is a 2,000 point group heal. So, there’s like some group heals at the end there just to do that. But I also have them on my, you know, they’re on my bar, so I can cast them whenever I want. So, that’s something to keep in mind. Now, that is that is all the ones in the rotation. From there, we have uh uh what is it? solemn cleansing which I have in another button here called numpad 2 which just heal tanks just like I want to heal myself and so uh I’m looking at it now and it’s not actually uh it’s not actually going to do anything u because it doesn’t have the uh x target 20 at the top uh but that that doesn’t matter for uh what it is I usually I’m usually going to hit outnumb one to do it anyway so first thing thing it’s going to do is cleansing and then the second time I push the button it’s going to do the next deal he deal once the spells refresh right so definitely uh something there now this would you know whatever I target is going to work on so that’s why I think that’s why I didn’t have that so I can target the druid I can heal the druid so that gives me the ability to heal somebody now uh without uh having to target them with my druid and the the paladin’s got some pretty big heals so it’s pretty nice there and then we have solemn touch, which is a uh is just another single target heal. I’ll have this just in case I need it, right? Like uh it’ll probably get into this button here eventually just as a is this the filler to heal with, right? So I can, you know, hit numpad, you know, all the different F1 keys to target whoever I need to and then boom, throw a heal on them, right? That is something I’m changing because I can’t do that with my druid and, you know, still validly play, right? because I can target somebody and I, you know, I can I can do those heals. So, that should work out theoretically, plus give me aggro. And then finally, we have our uh substance of a tunar, which is our current level ward of Tunar line, which uh just gives us the whenever we get hit, we get a little heal, we get a little armor class, some attack rating, some strength, uh all that stuff. So, every time we hit eight, there’s a little proc and it does this uh 500 point heal. So, it’s pretty nice. You want to keep this up at all times. So, you know, it does have a to 30 second recast. So, it’s not something you want to put in uh one of my little clicky buttons, right? You want to have it up at all times on your bar. Uh there’s going to be two more spells I know of that will be on our bar at all times and then we’ll probably replace these ones here eventually. But uh we did get two more spell slots at this last uh from 79 to 8 or 75 to 80. Uh so that kind of gives us more room to work with. Uh at 130 we’ll have 14 spell slots. I believe I believe we’re going to get one at 105 and then another at like 125 or so. So that gives us a lot more room to play with uh spell-wise. I do not believe we’re going to get different spell lines for the most part until about 110. So, this is pretty much pretty much it. There might be a few changes here and there, but uh that’s going to be how it is. Uh now, we do do bells. Uh that is our current level bells. We want to make sure we do that at all times. I do have these little hockey buttons. Um see if I can get it to cast here. Little hockey buttons to make it easier for me to cast these spells. So, this will just give us uh a bunch of hit points and stuff like that. Uh see, let’s let it go all the way down. You can see these. I’ll show the button here in just a second. There we go. All right. So, it pause 100 mems the spell, right? These are some new commands they added a few patches ago. So, you can do this automatically. It’s very nice. Uh wait, you know, 10 seconds, cast the spell. So the way these weights work are it’s after the command, right? So pause 10 or you know that’s 10 seconds, right? So that’s going to after it does that command, it’s going to pause for 10 seconds, right? Same with this one. It’s going to cast 12, but it’s going to pause for 10 seconds. And then mim spell set. Mim’s my spell set down here, which I call current, which is my current spell set, right? And if I wanted to make a separate spell spec set, say I was uh grouping with somebody who else was who was was a tank, right? Uh like say a warrior or a shadow knight and I wanted to go more as a healer, I would probably drop all my stuns and you know change up some of my rotation so that these healing spells are actually kind of swapped around here. So when I’m in combat, I’m casting healing spells with my multimind, right? But I haven’t done that yet. I probably won’t even do that at all because I don’t plan on grouping with anybody with this guy. Uh, but that’s that. We did get an upgrade to our uh our symbol. So, that one’s a new new one there. It’s Booth Smark. Uh, now I I think you’ll remember I’ve talked about, you know, some of these characters, they want aism. Some of these characters want druid skin. Some of these characters, you know, they have their choices that they want, right? and I block certain spells. Now, with that said, in all actuality, someone cast, you know, busting, you know, the top top tier uh angelism or druid skin on me. I’m not going to block that because I like the extra 30,000 hit points. So, I’m going to keep that on for right now. But, I do block my druid who’s in my group, the current level version of that. So, I do block the current level version on the paladin. I take aism on the paladin. Uh, the enchanter takes druid skin, the druid takes druid skin, the wizard takes druid skin, but the mages take agilism. So, there’s some choices you got to make there in, you know, how you lay out your group and stuff like that. So, keep that in mind. It’s always good to have a little button for it here so you can always get that up, right? I don’t even think I cast it fizzled. Uh, so, you know, do that. Then, we have AC. Now, the AC boler of piety. This one, uh, this one is not as updated, right? So, this is level 69 spell. Um, I don’t cast it really at all because it’s the ones the ones who get druid skin are the ones who would want it, right? And they’re going to die anyway. So, it doesn’t really matter. I’m not I’m not going to waste my time with it. But for me as a paladin and I have druid skin, you know, it’s probably going to be worth it for me to cast it on myself even though it’s not that much AC. Uh, and then we have divine protectors unity, which is our current unity spell. Now, this is rank two now. Uh, so it has now added righteous fury into the spells it casts. Righteous fury is our proc. Uh, divine might line. I believe they got rid of the undead line at this point and it’s just this one. This one does about 500 uh damage proc. I believe it was uh no 270. So it’s procking for about 270 which is pretty decent, right? It seems to proc a lot. So it’s nice little thing to have. And then you have your armor buff which is the reason why you do not want druid skin. This is a better buff than druid skin. You know, this plus agilism is better than druid skin plus symbol and all that, right? So, you’re going to want that because it has the mana regen and all the all the extra stats. Obviously, I don’t have it on now because I have druid skin on. So, makes sense, right? And then what is the other one? Scan piety. We talked about this one. It just lets us resist spells remorseless of the fallen. Uh gives us a buff if we are the killer of a mob, right? So, that’s pretty nice there. Uh, we do do blessed aura. That is our current aura. It does add like I think 10% to all healing spells. It’s impossible to get the stats on it anywhere, but uh that’s what it does. Uh, now we do armor of the quorum. I have rank two cuz I got lucky on a drop. But, uh, this will take 25% of incoming melee damage for 1 minute and uh, absorb up to 22,000 of that damage. Right. So, it’s pretty nice little, you know, tanking buff, mini discip, uh, defensive, if you will. But, uh, it’s really good. We still use deflection. Uh, we’re going to use deflection all the way to 130. It never gets changed. Allows us to pretty much block everything with our shield, which is really great. And then we have uh, armor of the Inquisitioner, which is another uh, another little buff here. This one uh increases the duration uh or the effectness of incoming heals and gives us more armor class. So it’s pretty nice there. Uh so that’s all those all that. Uh we do have uh one burn inquisitor’s judgment. I don’t have it on the bar yet. Uh I just typed up the macro here, but this will give us a better melee offensive. Uh, so it lets us trigger uh a 12,000 or 1,200 damage proc for uh 20 times. So nice little extra damage if we need it. Uh we don’t really have everything yet. I think around 8590 we’re going to start getting uh more burnish abilities and stuff like that. Uh we do have holy forge uh right here, which I don’t know if I’ve mentioned, but this gives us a massive damage to one dead. It’s a five minute duration, 1 hour reuse. Kind of something nice to have, right? If we are uh doing that uh like fighting undead, so we just want to do a little burn. Uh I don’t have it on any buttons or anything like that. It’s just up there. Uh see here, lay of hands is important. I just it’s a heal. Now, the cool thing about it, like early on, it’s just a heal, but now it is a heal plus a heal over time. And you can see it heals for 78,000 hit points, which is a complete heal for me still with all these external buffs. And then it’s 20,000 health every 6 seconds. Now, that is huge if you think about it. Like, there’s been a few times on stream where I’m getting absolutely destroyed. I lay hands and I can survive the fight uh because I’m I’m healing so much with that spell. So, it’s pretty nice to have there. Um, and then uh what is this one? Hand py. This is a group heal for 7,800. I use this as my quick heal to save my my group members. That’s pretty much it. Uh cloak of light gives us invis undead. I don’t actually need this on my bar anymore because we picked up group perfected invisibility undead. So, uh pretty nice there. Gift of resurrection gives us the ability to res. Later on, we’re going to get the ability to res better uh at level 90, but not yet. Uh, we also have Divine Aura. Uh, this has saved my life a few times. This makes me invulnerable to all attacks and it heals me for 12,000 every 6 seconds. So, definitely something nice to have there. Just in case we need it. Uh, these are just bandelier buttons for switching weapons. Holy steed doesn’t even need to be on the bar because it summons something. I don’t know why it was there. Uh Mars salvation is 100% almost necessary uh for the group as it lowers everybody’s aggro significantly. Uh you want to make sure you have that, but you want to block it on your paladin. You want to block it on your paladin. Otherwise, you will it’ll do nothing. Like it’s negated, right? You’re going to be generating less and everybody else is generating less, right? Purification. This is just a cure. Same with radiant cure, right? These are cures, so they’re nice. Uh that is it that Okay, so that is all our spells. That is our rotation. It is pretty simple. My rotation is taunt, disarm, uh force of temporis, solemn force, lesser, uh lesson of contrition, uh burst of marorrow, radiant light, or of marorrow, wave of absolution, and force of disruption. Now, all these heal spells do not do not cast, right? They’re there just in case some for some reason they do cast. I don’t know how far it gets with the target to target. I don’t know how long the mob is going to live. So, sometimes I’m not going to get through a full rotation before the mob dies. Uh but it, you know, we’re refining it as we go and then we have everything else we can cast there. Now, gearwise, uh, Elegant Defiant is starting to show its weakness. It’s getting pretty weak. I know. Uh, what is this? We bought this gear. This is the level 75 gear from uh um gosh, Marks of Valor. That’s where it is. The Marks of Valor uh stuff. So, this is definitely not that great. Obviously, if you look at it right, it’s less than the elegant defiant, but the stuff we’re going to buy at level 80 now, now that we’re level 80, we’re going to go probably buy some more in the next uh in the next episode of uh Hamrock Slays and Death. We’re going to go probably buy that. Uh I do have uh 1,000 marks of valor now to spend on some of this stuff so we can pick up some stuff to replace some of these these weaker items. You’re going to want the best weapon you can get. Um, typically, uh, paladin weapons have like a rune on them. Uh, for some reason, this one has a proc on it. So, getting that into a rune is going to help you there. You’re going to want a good shield. You’re going to want the high AC, you know, tank shield because it usually has some kind of proc on it for tanking and stuff like that. Uh, but that is uh that is gear, right? Uh, not much else. That is about it. So, if you’re if you’re leveling one of these up and you’re at level 80, you’re going to want to pick up, you know, defensive AAs first if you’re a tank. And uh then go into offensive and utility spells, but focus 100% on tanking stuff first. But that is how I play my level 80 paladin. If you have any questions or comments, let me know. If there’s uh suggestions, let me know and uh we can talk about it. But thank you very much for watching and please have a fantastic Okay.
